Sutton Place is located south and east of the Upper East Side, but it is the rare Manhattan neighborhood that feels as if it belongs in another city entirely. This small, surpassingly posh mini-neighborhood runs between First Avenue and the East River, between 53rd and 59th Streets, but a simple geographical description does not really do justice to Sutton Place's unique city-within-a-city feeling. The tree-lined streets and stately pre-war apartment buildings of Sutton Place -- almost all of them are co-ops of the most exclusive variety, and none of them are rentals -- recall the more rarefied neighborhoods of London far more than they do the bustling stretches of Midtown East and the lower Upper East Side nearby. The sidewalks and generous private gardens of Sutton Place have a sort of quiet about them that no other Manhattan neighborhood can boast, while Sutton Place apartments offer East River views and pre-war grace that few Manhattan apartments can match. It's an unusual and luxurious place.
While Sutton Place doesn't offer much in the way of services -- the occasional dry cleaner, small deli, or neighborhood bistro is about it -- those familiar NYC conveniences aren't really essential to this neighborhood's considerable appeal.
