Top Five Art Galleries in Chelsea
Chelsea is at the center of the New York City art world, and with so many galleries to choose from, we've compiled a list of five of our favorites. Whether you're an art connoisseur or just looking to test the waters, this list is for you.
#1 The Rubin Museum of Art
The Rubin Museum of Art features Manhattan’s prevailing collection of art from the Himalayas, making it one of the top art galleries in Chelsea. Opening its doors in 2004, the Rubin Museum now displays more than 1,000 objects, from paintings and sculptures, to textiles and ritual objects. Currently on exhibition is Gateway to Himalayan Art, which aims to acquaint museum visitors with the primary concepts of Himalayan art, along with the cultural significance. Every Friday night, the museum’s Cafe Serai becomes the K2 Lounge, which is a favorite among locals for cocktails. Museum hours are Monday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm, closed Tuesday, Wednesday 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Thursday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm, Friday 11:00 am - 10:00 pm, and Saturday & Sunday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.
#2 Gagosian Gallery
Gagosian Gallery easily competes with the biggest and best museums in the city with its impressive collection of contemporary art. Chelsea is home to two premier Gagosian exhibition spaces, which often feature artwork by established and upcoming artists throughout the world. Currently, Gagosian Gallery at 522 West 21st Street is presenting an exhibition of recent works by German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer. Premiering on May 9th at the 555 West 24th Street location is an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by the incredibly successful Jeff Koons. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.
#3 Jonathan Levine Gallery
The Jonathan Levine Gallery is one of the top art galleries in Chelsea because of its commitment to presenting some of the best cutting-edge work in the art world. This gallery exhibits contemporary art in the style of low-brow, pop surrealism, and street art. Popular artists that have their works on display at Jonathan Levine Gallery include Blek le Rat, Space Invader, and Shepard Fairey. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo exhibition by the vibrant works of Souther Salazar entitled Souvenirs. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.
#4 Printed Matter
We know Printed Matter isn’t your typical art gallery, but the organization’s unique dedication to publications made by artists makes it a must see for any fan of art. Printed Matter has a large collection of artists’ books, magazines, screenprints, and more. Browsing the collection at Printed Matter, you’re sure to find an artist or two you’ve heard of, and hundreds that you never have. Beginning May 4th, an exhibition of works by Eve Fowler & Sam Gordon will be on display. Printed Matter hours are Monday - Wednesday 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Thursday - Friday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, Saturday 11:00 am - 7:00 pm.
#5 David Zwirner Gallery
David Zwirner is often considered to be one of the most powerful people in the art world, which is one of the reasons why his gallery makes our list of the top art galleries in Chelsea. The David Zwirner Gallery has helped foster the careers of artists such as Neo Rauch and Luc Tuymans, both of whom had their American debuts with Zwirner. The 30,000 square feet of gallery space in Chelsea allows for multiple full-scale exhibitions. Currently, the David Zwirner Gallery is presenting an exhibition of early work by the innovative artist Richard Serra. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.
