You wouldn't necessarily know it from a lot of Manhattan apartments, but there are more options when it comes to furnishing a New York City apartment than buying too much furniture that you cannot find space for, throwing out your old coffee table because you found another, shipping your couch back home to your parents to make room for the oh-so-necessary desk, or deciding not to buy that shelf because you have no idea where you can fit it. Sounds crazy, but it's true. In what will become a semi-regular feature here at the New Construction Manhattan blog, we're going to get in service-y mode and outline some other routes you can take to make your NYC condo a home. Or at least a much less cluttered and better-organized NYC condo:

Route 1: Don’t buy more furniture than you need. It is possible to teach yourself to say, “That table would look good in my living room, but I don’t really need it.” Remember, just say, “No.”

Route 2: Squish just enough furniture into your Manhattan condo so that your visitors cannot call you a hoarder.

Route 3: Don’t buy any furniture at all and live a simple life with your clothes in piles on the floor and by eating dinner off your lap. Hey, at least you will always have plenty of open party space.

Route 4: Buy yourself some space-saving furniture or think about other ways to save space in your Manhattan condo.

The downfalls of the first three routes seem pretty self-explanatory -- unless you need us to explain that eating soup off your lap is unwise -- so let us discuss our fourth option some more, shall we? Furniture does exist that can fulfill the purpose of two things. For example, if you would really like to get work done at home, why not think about getting a piece of furniture that is desk by day, bed by night. Or instead of buying extra chairs for those occasional days when you need more seating, buy a shelf that can be broken down into a stool. The creator of the pull-out couch had the right idea when it came to saving space. If we follow in his footsteps, it may actually be possible to accomplish comfortable -- and spacious -- New York City living. Staying organized is all that it takes to save space in your Manhattan apartment; there are always different ways to do so and space-saving furniture is just one of these ways.

It is not too late to change the way your Manhattan apartment is furnished. There are many things that you can do to give yourself space; it just depends on if space to you means being able to comfortably walk around your apartment or having just enough room to squeeze your body from one room into the next.
