Living with the Stars in New York City

While all of us hope that we get good neighbors when we move into a new apartment building in Manhattan, some of us are luckier than the others in that department. Some of the world’s most recognizable celebrities live in New York City, with many of them living in luxury apartment buildings around Manhattan—just like you! So don’t be surprised if you walk out of your home one morning to run into your favorite star in their pajamas—stranger things have happened, and they seem to all happen right here in New York.

The prospect of being able to live with celebrities can itself be a great incentive for many of New York City’s apartment hunters. Forget about the great views and the high ceilings for a minute—wouldn’t you like to work out in the building’s gym alongside Hugh Jackman? How about sharing a short chit-chat session with Jane Fonda as you travel on the Chelsea Mercantile’s elevator together? And let’s not forget the ultimate dream—traipsing down to your neighbor’s apartment to borrow a cup of sugar, when your neighbor is Cindy Crawford.

These are just a few of the many scenarios listed in a story in The New York Times that talks about the various aspects to living with the stars. It is interesting to note that most of the celebrities profiled in the article seemed to have had great experiences living with “the common folk.” For instance, former “Law and Order: SVU” actor Chris Meloni said that he enjoyed being his Midtown West building’s “resident celebrity,” particularly remembering an occasion where he and a fellow resident enjoyed a long discussion about, and with, a number of bottles of wine.

Although celebrities in New York City change their addresses a lot, there’s always a steady stream of stars living in the city’s various neighborhoods. Chelsea’s cultural spaces have stars like Nick Jonas, Sam Waterston and Lance Bass living in them, while the classic confines of the Upper West Side is home for Jerry Seinfeld and Ron Howard. Thanks to their demands for privacy, the actual addresses of these celebrities are usually never said out loud, but residents of these neighborhoods can rest assured of a celebrity sighting sooner or later.

But there is an added lesson to be learnt from the throngs of celebrities moving into Manhattan. It’s good to remember that our stars are investors too, and right now, they are choosing to put their money in New York City real estate. With the real estate industry on an upswing, the city is one of the best places to invest, and buying such luxury condominium apartments seems to be the best way to do just that. With the stars already doing it, this may be a good time to take a page out of their books, and buy from the range of great homes that now available for sale in Manhattan.
